a four-year contract worth nearly $50 million, the Texas Rangers
announced a hike in ticket prices Wednesday. Lower box seats will cost $30, up from $25 last year and $20
in 1996. Club box seats also will be $30, plus an additional $5
fee for waiter service that is waived for season-ticket holders. Grandstand tickets, the cheapest seats in the park, will remain
$2 for children 13 and under, but will go up to $5 from $4 for
adults. The team has added a $5 seat for children in the $10 upper
box area. "We felt we had to increase ticket prices to expand our
payroll," Rangers president Tom Schieffer said. "We
are committed to putting the money we raise back on the field." The Rangers had a payroll of more than $62 million last season.
They also won their second division title. Also Wednesday, the team announced its 1999 season opener will
be at home on April 5, at 1:35 p.m. CST against the Detroit Tigers. The Rangers scheduled 69 night games and 12 day games at The
Ballpark next season.
