his pay with a new contract with the Texas Rangers worth $2,312,500,
it was announced Friday. Goodwin, who made $1.05 million last season, agreed to terms
on a one-year pact. Rookie right-handed pitchers Brandon Knight and Dan Smith also
signed one-year contracts for 1998. However, no terms of those
deals were disclosed. Goodwin batted .260 with two home runs and 39 RBIs in 150 games
with Texas and Kansas City. The Rangers acquired him from Kansas
City in late August in exchange for Dean Palmer. Goodwin ranked third in the American League with 50 stolen
bases while setting career highs for games, at-bats (574), runs
(90), hits (149), doubles (26), triples (6) and walks (44). In the last three seasons, Goodwin has 166 steals, tops in
the majors over that span. Goodwin, 29, had been eligible for salary arbitration. Pitchers
Bobby Witt, Eric Gunderson, Darren Oliver and Aaron Sele and infielder
Lee Stevens remain eligible for arbitration. Nineteen of 39 players on the major league roster are under
contract for 1998.
