to I-45 World Series DALLAS (AP) - With the Houston Astros in the playoffs and the
Texas Rangers on the brink of qualifying, do Lone Star State baseball
fans dare dream about an all-Texas World Series? The Yankees, Dodgers and Giants played in many Subway Series
in New York. St. Louis and Kansas City put on the I-70 Series
in 1985. The Giants and Athletics had the Bay Bridge Series in
1989. But there's never been an I-45 Series. In fact, neither the Astros nor the Rangers have EVER made
it to the World Series. But this year could be different, according to some fans -
especially Astros fans. The Rangers reduced their "magic number" to clinching
the American League Western Division championship to 1 on Thursday
night with a 9-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Anaheim
Angels defeated the Oakland Athletics 10-6 to stay within three
games of the Rangers with three games remaining. "I think this team is just better-equipped than ever,
and the fans sense this," Kenny Hand, a Houston radio talk-show
host and former sportswriter, told The Dallas Morning News. "They
can smell the World Series." The Astros have been streaking ever since they acquired pitcher
Randy Johnson, who is 10-1 with Houston, and they've won more
games than any previous Astros team. "Hey, you gotta be excited," Astros fan Larry Navarro
said during a visit to a Houston sports bar. "I think they'll
go all the way. We got the lineup, the pitching." Rangers fans are a bit more reserved, having experienced their
team's up-and-down season. While Houston has nearly sold out National
League playoff tickets, there are plenty of good seats remaining
in Arlington for the American League playoffs. "People weren't getting too excited until they beat Anaheim
this week," said Roland Jones, who was buying Rangers' playoff
tickets after the team beat the Angels three times in a row. Yolanda Mendiola, another ticket buyer, told the newspaper
she hasn't thought much about an I-45 Series yet. "I'm trying to get the Rangers there first," Ms.
Mendiola said. Longtime Rangers fan Bob Riley said he'd love to see an all-Texas
series. "I dream of it," Riley said. "But I don't think
so."
