contract HOUSTON (AP) -- Catcher Brad Ausmus and the Houston Astros
avoided salary arbitration by agreeing Friday on a $7.5 million,
three-year contract. Ausmus, 27, played in a career-high 130 games last year, hitting
.266. He led the National League in throwing out runners attempting
to steal and had only seven errors. "Catching is a critical position on any baseball team,"
Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said. "Brad clearly
made a difference for us last year and todayÕs signing
will solidify this important role for the next three years." Ausmus, who made $1,075,000 last season, gets $1.5 million
in 1998, $2.5 million in 1999 and $3.5 million in 2000. He can
earn $500,000 in performance bonuses during the contract, with
a limit of $250,000 in any one season. Stevens to get $1.2 million ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Infielder Lee Stevens will receive
$1.2 million this season under his new contract with the Texas
Rangers. Stevens, who agreed to the deal Thursday, got a four-fold increase
from his 1997 salary of $300,000. He had asked for $1.6 million in arbitration and Texas had
offered $900,000. Right-handers Darren Oliver and Aaron Sele are the only Rangers
remaining in arbitration.
