transfer to the University of Houston to play for new coach Clyde
Drexler. Smith told Houston TV station KRIV he's trying to get his release
from UT officials so he can transfer. "I wanted to go there last year but the coaching situation
was a little shaky but now the coaching situation is perfect for
me," Smith said. UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds told the station Smith must
talk with new Texas coach Rick Barnes before any release is granted. Smith said he's confident of getting his release. "Not any worries at all," he said. "I talked
to DeLoss when all this stuff went on with (former UT coach Tom)
Penders and he said if we had any problems and wanted our release
just come to him and he'll give it to us." Smith, who played in 31 games as a freshman last season at
Texas, would have to sit out one season if he transferred. He
would have three years of eligibility remaining. Drexler declined comment on Smith's intention to transfer,
saying he was bound by NCAA rules.
