and threw for another to lead Texas Christian to a 41-18 victory
over UNLV on Saturday, giving the Horned Frogs their first winning
season since 1995. Basil Mitchell rushed for 220 yards and one touchdown on 26
carries for TCU, which finished 6-5. UNLV finished 0-11 in coach Jeff Horton's final game. He was
13-44 in five years, including a 16-game losing streak -- the
longest in school history. Horton said Tuesday that athletic director Charles Cavagnaro
told him he would be fired after the game. Horton, who had a year
left on his contract, turned down an offer to remain in the athletic
department. TCU led 7-0 with 8:32 remaining in the first quarter on a 1-yard
run by LaDainian Tomlinson. On UNLV's first possession, Chad Reed
fumbled at the Rebels' 13-yard line and TCU's Joseph Phipps recovered. On the ensuing possession, Batteaux threw a 1-yard TD to Jason
Illian, and the Horned Frogs led 14-0. After a 2-yard TD run by Batteaux early in the second quarter,
Russell Gary returned an interception 69 yards to give TCU a 20-8
lead. Kevin Crook passed 50 yards to Len Ware for UNLV's first score
that made it 28-6. TCU answered with Mitchell's 74-yard TD run
that closed out the first half. Crook passed for two more TDs in the second half to Carlos
Baker, but the Rebels never got closer than 35-12.
