local product Todd Van Poppel from the minors, the Texas Rangers
traded him Friday to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Esteban Loaiza,
another right-handed pitcher. Loaiza is scheduled to start Saturday night when Texas hosts
Tampa Bay. Loaiza, 26, was 6-5 with a 4.52 ERA for the Pirates this season
in 14 starts and seven relief appearances. In 91 innings this
year, he has given up 96 hits and 30 walks while striking out
53 batters. In two-plus seasons with the Pirates, Loaiza is 27-28
with a 4.63 ERA. Van Poppel, 26, who grew up in Arlington and starred at Arlington
Martin High School, was 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA in four starts for
Texas. He was signed as a minor-league free agent and spent time
at Class AAA Oklahoma City before joining the Rangers on June
20. Van Poppel was a first-round pick of the Oakland Athletics
in the 1990 amateur draft, but has never fulfilled the expectations
of scouts. He is 21-35 in his major-league career. The Rangers also gave up minor-league second baseman Warren
Morris, 24, who was hitting .331 with 14 home runs and 73 runs
batted in for Class AA Tulsa. Morris played in the recent Class
AA All-Star game. Van Poppel will join the Pirates this weekend, and Morris will
be assigned to the Pirates' Class AA Carolina team.
