Brown says he will wait on the judicial system before deciding
on possible team sanctions against two linemen arrested on alcohol-related
charges. The players, both seniors, were identified by UT as center
Russell Gaskamp and guard Ben Adams. Gaskamp is charged with driving while intoxicated. Adams is
charged with public intoxication. UT officials said they were
arrested in Austin's Sixth Street area early Saturday by an agent
of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. "When the situation is investigated thoroughly and any
possible legal action is concluded, we will determine what action
would best educate the young man. Any action will be handled within
the team," Brown said. Gaskamp, 6-foot-4, 305 pounds, is from Weatherford, Okla. He
has been projected to replace center Ryan Fiebiger. Gaskamp missed
all of last season with a back injury but returned for spring
drills. Adams, 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, from LaMirada, Calif., has started
24 straight games, at left guard in 1996 and right guard in 1997. "We take a strong stance against drinking and an even
stronger position concerning drinking and driving in our program,"
Brown said. "With that in mind, we don't treat any case that involves
drinking lightly. Obviously it is extremely important to gather
all the facts in the case and discuss them with (the players)
and their families before making any decisions," Brown said.
