I think receiving the AP Offensive Player of the Year is significant for Colt. This was voted on by sports writers and others who actually saw these teams play each other. That might influence those Heisman voters who haven't turned in their ballots yet. I figure the Heisman race is now between Colt and Tim Tebow. If you recall, Colt also received the award for Offensive Newcomer of the year his freshman year. To see the complete story of yesterday's award announcement, just click on the Colt in the News link at the top of the page. Congratulations, Colt!

Just want to say in the midst of all of the fighting that I am proud of Colt and his accomplishments and proud of the boys that struggled on the field week in and week out. They had an awesome year. Let's all focus on the positive and realize that these are good kids on both teams that have worked very hard. There are so many great Texas high school players that we have to spread them around to other states. Our teams here cannot hold them all. I think it is super that so many go and play all over the country. Colt thank you for being the real deal, for playing your heart out and for being a TEAM quarterback. We love you. Now, go pick up that Heisman trophy!

Oh, and by the way, just try to win Jack-you-know-what without your football players from the great state of Texas. There are 43 Lone Star players on the OU roster. Maybe they should call Oklahoma "Texas North."

I mistakingly called the AP media poll the AP coaches poll. As far as UT's next game. That'll probably be in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State or Utah, but who knows anymore.

Danny from GoColtGo.com said:

Commissioner Beebe said they will reconsider the rule, but he also said they're not going to rush any decision. I doubt if it will even change next year. BUT, Texas still has a chance to "share" the title if the AP coaches poll awards it to them after all the bowling is done in Janusary. That has happened before, with one team claiming the national title from the BCS and another from the coaches poll. I think the latter is more accurate.

I like what Colt said about the whole thing: "Today was a really tough day, waiting around to find out we didn't make the Big Championship game. That was very disappointing because we had finished the season so strong and done so well against the two teams that are playing in the game. But, we had a great team meeting and Coach Brown pushed all of the positives with us, like he always does. He told us that it was okay to be disappointed, but after the meeting it was time to move forward and be prepared to get ready for a big bowl game. As a leader on this team, it's one of my jobs to make sure we do that. There is a lot left out there to play for and crazy things happen all the time in college football so who knows where we'll end up. We'll stay focused and be ready to finish this season strong, especially for our seniors. Once we know where we're going, we'll get ourselves prepared to play our best game of the season."

One last P.S. before my outlaws, er ... in-laws get into town. To Mary: In his annual predictions, Matt Hayes of the Sporting News agrees with you. He says the BCS will barely favor Texas over OU because of the Red River Rivalry win. The Horns will then beat Missouri and face Florida in the title game. The rest of his predictions you won't like so much ... he says the Gators will beat UT, and because the Heisman vote will be split among the Big 12 QBs, Tim Tebow will win the award. Just to let you know, though, a "real expert" agrees with you about how the BCS breaks the tie in the Big 12.

~Merkel Fan ... that story will make the biggest lineman get a little teary-eyed. Colt spent two years in high school tutoring underprivileged kids, he volunteered countless hours doing other community work, and he looks forward to Spring Break - not to go lie on a beach and get drunk somewhere - but to help others less fortunate ... usually in an impoverished country like Peru or somewhere 1,000 miles removed from South Padre Island. No telling how many kids he's already had a positive impact upon as one of greatest role models in sports today. That's not only a tribute to Colt, but to his parents - Brad and Debra - who raised one fine, young man. We can give thanks for people like Colt and his cousin, Sgt. Grant Hinds. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I'm officially on honey-do time now.

Candy and Sam, normally I would agree with you guys, and this year you may be right, however every year their is a team ranked this high going into championship game week who falls out because they aren't a conference champion. Try KU & MU last year (KU had better record than national champs LSU and same record as tOSU." The reasoning the voters use is "they aren't a conference champion," The strength of schedule issue is mute as all of these teams played each other during the season. OU may leap us in the computers barely but human polls will keep us at number two in BCS as long as we spank the ags (no disrespect intended.) Now if Baylor beats Tech, we are in KC regardless, and to keep OU out for good, Go OSU! But if Tech wins, we better hope for close Sooner win in ugly game. Now this year may be the anomaly where voters and computers disregard conference championship for a prerequisite to National Championship game. This year has been strange. If so, than hope you guys are right and things turn out like you say.

I do agree with sam and candy, we need osu to upset ou at the least if we want a national championship which would probly be against florida. if you are doubting osu keep in mind that its in stillwater. where a game is, was a huge factor in the ou and ttu game and the ut and ttu game. the sooner defense tends to be overrated and they dont preform as well away on a big stage. If we happen to be reaaallly lucky, and you want a big 12 champ and a national champ, then osu needs to upset ou and baylor needs too upset ttu. Baylor is not likley to upset ttu, though cause it is in lubbock. But we cant overlook A&M, we have to pound them. even though its at home i dont know what to expect from this sheepish 4-7 aggie team. WOW THIS IS A WHOLE BIG MESS!!!! in my opinion we NEED a play-off. The coaches (harris) and ap polls are useless!! it aggravates me!

Who knows what the computer rankings will do, but I tend to agree with Sam. There is a good chance that Okla. could leapfrog Texas with a blowout win over OKla St. They could even leapfrog with a slight win. I'd rather OK lose and let Tech have the Big 12 Championship game. (Tech would be the Big 12 champ based on head-to-head.) Tech is not going to catch up with Texas in the BCS standings , and Texas will stay #2 and go the national championship game. I'd rather have a national championship than a Big 12 championship. There is also a chance that OKLA wins this week, leapfrogs Texas and goes to the Big 12 Championship and loses to Missouri. Then Texas is back at #2 and goes to the national championship game.

We are only ahead of OU by the slimmest of margins, and if OU beats OSU, their strength-of-schedule numbers automatically edge up on ours for beating a cruddy A&M team. I hope I'm wrong and you're right, but I don't think so.

Mary Youngblood from Leander, TX said:

Yeah but, we beat OU which keeps us ahead of them in SOS. We also beat OSU and when we beat them they were ranked higher. We also had Mizzou which OU did not play this year. Besides, the voters in the polls will vote for us when we are on national TV and that is where we won't lose ground. You might be right about OU jumping us, but mark my words if we are not in KC we will not be in Miami, but in Glendale in the Big XII slot in the Ffiesta Bowl!

Sam from San Saba said:

Good to see you back, Mary! Hate to disagree with you, but if OU wins against OSU, they WILL jump ahead of us in the BCS standings. The computers are our side now, but with the OSU victory, OU's strength of schedule trumps us in the computer world, especially when we beat the Aggies, who are only 4-7. That means OU goes to the Big 12 game, not us. Remember, OSU has only lost to Tech and us. And you don't need to be conference champ to get a date to the national championship. So, go Cowboys!! Plus, Baylor has been improving lately, so who's to say they won't beat Tech. So, go Bears, too!!!!
18:34 11/24/2008

Mary Youngblood from Leander, TX said:

To answer "From Said" question, we are tied for first with OU and Tech. ESPN listed us that way because they listed it alphabetically. OU can win south with OSU game win and TX loss. TX can win with A&M game win and Tech loss. Tech can win with Baylor game win and OU loss. If all win or all lose, tie breaker would be whoever is ranked highest in BCS poll. The computers have us ranked higher than OU despite the humans, and if we do a clinic on A&M, we should stay that way. They won't make us lose ground with a solid win and they were interviewing Mack during the U Conn and USF game and keeping us on the front page. Also Colt is a definite Heisman front runner and they would want to see him in a championship game to highlight his season. So no we do not want OU to lose, but we do want game to be tough. Now if Tech looses to Baylor, than OU loss would be great because we can win outright. But even so we would be going to KC vs Mizzou. Keep in mind, they don't like to put teams in championship games who don't win their respective conference.
18:01 11/24/2008

Mary Youngblood from Leander, TX said:

Thank Heavens for BCS Computers!!! The coaches, media and Harris polls had us at four behind OU (who we beat fair and square on the field, dang it!) and Florida (who trounced The Citadel, The Citadel, are you kidding me, they might as well have been idle!) Anyways, lets beat them Aggies and root for OU to win so that we get into the Big XII and National Chapionship Games! Hook 'Em Horns, and Colt for Heisman.
17:51 11/24/2008

Sam from San Saba said:

Here's what we want to happen ... at least! OSU's got to beat OU. That way, those Okies can't jump past us in the BCS. Who cares about the Big 12 championship. Let Tech have it, if they can beat Baylor. It's the national one we want. If all the favored teams win this weekend, OU WILL jump past the Longhorns in the BCS, and then go to the Big 12 game. Unless Missouri upsets OU there, we will never get back into one of the top 2 spots for the BCS big game. Go Cowboys!!!

Texas, OU, and Tech are all tied 10-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Big 12 South conference title won't/can't be decided until Texas plays A&M on Thursday, OU plays OSU, and Tech plays Baylor. The path of least resistance would be if OSU beats OU and Baylor beats Tech, and of course Texas beats A&M.

Here is one more for you.. OU beats Texas Tech, but Somehow loses to Okie State.. OU is out of Conference Contention because they have two loses. Texas Tech goes on to play for the Conference Title and lose to Mizzou.. Texas is now # 2 because Texas Tech is two loss... Here Texas will play Alabama or Florida.. Now this is assuming that Alabama and Florida win out the rest of their regular season games

Kris Dixit from Austin, Texas said:

Danny, your wife has a point.. Its possible.. I have also been looking at other possibilities where Texas does not play for the conference title and still ends up playing for the national championship, for example, Alabama wins out and plays Florida for the SEC title where it wins as well. Alabama is #1. Now Oklahoma beats tech goes to #2 and plays Missouri for the Conference title. Here a resurgent Missouri comes back in the 4th quarter to beat Oklahoma in over time.. Who is #2 now... Texas.. So Texas plays Alabama in the national championship. Basically there are lots of possibilities where Texas can end up with a championship title and not a conference title.. Wierd

Kris from Austin said:

Thanks Danny.. Much appreciated.. I think if you are a longhorn fan it all boils down to two games. Root for the Pokes to beat Tech this saturday, and root for Oklahoma to win out.. I know I am saying that Danny's alma mater will go two loss (sorry Danny, but we need this :) ).. But if this happens the two top schools in the Big 12 South will be the Longhorns and Sooners. And the Longhorns go to the Conference title (based on the #2 tie breaker) and hopefully to the National Title. This also means that the longhorns have to crush all the teams that they play.. and that is not going to be easy because, Baylor is getting better, the Kansas game is an away game and Texas A&M is always a tough game. If Texas can manage to crush these three teams, then those style points will go a long way at the end in the BCS polls..

Kris from Austin, Texas said:

You need math.. you have a geek right here... Ok Danny is right, you do not need for Tech to lose twice for Texas to go to the Conference Title. The tie breaker rules are as follows. 1) Number of conference wins 2) if tied for # 1 then head to head wins 3) if tied for #2 as well then BCS ranking....... Ok so based on this, if OSU defeats Tech next week at Lubbock, this will most likely mean that we go to the Conference Title. Why? Because, then Tech plays Oklahoma at Norman, and they have to beat Oklahoma, and if OSU defeats Oklahoma in Still water, we should hold on to our highest BCS rank and go to play for Conference Title. The path of least resistance is that OSU defeats Tech, and Oklahoma Defeats Tech, and we have head to head since all teams are one loss and Texas still goes to the Conference Title. Here are the circumstances where Texas does not go to the Conference Title. 1) If Tech Wins out 2) If Tech loses to OSU, But somehow beats OU and then OSU loses to OU. Here We get head to head with Tech, Tech since both OSU and OU are now two loss and are out of Conference Title Contention. Tech Goes to the conference title. Suffice it to say that Tech holds its destiny in its own hands and how they play oklahoma and OSU will determine if they have a chance to go to the conference title..

BTW, I've been looking at Big 12 tiebreaker procedures, and Lynn, I don't think Tech has to lose twice for Texas to still be in the hunt. But a third team has to finish with one loss as well. I hope to blog about that when I return from a trip down to the Hill Country tomorrow, but be forewarned, there is math involved.

Danny, I regret that you missed my point and if you need an apology - done. But one shouldn't let their personal biases read alma mater get in the way of a tribute blog to Colt (which by the way, I've always thought was a good if not great). You hear the pros like Musberger or Herbstreit say Colt is a good kid and a excellent player but they don't say I'm pulling for (fill in the blank) because that's my alma mater or the school that I'd rather win over Colt's team. I recall Kirk saying when asked on GameDay on who he thinks will win say "I can and won't since I'm calling the game." I also recall Kirk saying something like he has four boys at home and he hopes they grow up to be like Colt. To me, that's worth more than any rewards or trophies. I note this is from your first entry: "Colt McCoy is the breath freshener college sports needs right now. As the line between college and professional sports gets blurrier and blurrier, and more and more players falling victim to the "what's-in-it-for-me" approach to sports, watching a player who cares about his God, his family and his team (in that order) before he thinks of himself makes this Red Raider root for burnt orange." You wrote this before the game. "No matter who loses, I guess I won't be too disappointed." Actually, the opposite should be true, that you would be disappointed in either case since 1) your alma mater would lose or 2) the decent, talented, hard-working young man that this blog does a great job of promoting suffers a team loss which Colt is always talking about in all of his interviews. He said this last night, too: "All that matters is a win. We’re disappointed but we’re going to keep our heads up and keep fighting. There is still a lot of football left to play. When you lose it’s tough. That’s a hard thing to deal with but this team is awesome and this team fought. We didn’t play good but we fought till the end. You can’t argue with that and like I said, we’re going to keep our heads up and keep fighting because there is a lot of football left to play and we’ve got to move on. We’ve got to put this behind us." Responding to your criticism of me, I too respect and admire Colt and Mack ... more than you can imagine. I am not a fair weather fan of Colt or the Longhorns. I always believed he WAS the one to be UT QB when Young left the program too early. He proved that a couple of years ago in the TX/OU game when he came in for Young. Also, I've not called for Mack's head because I have trusted him from the day he came to Texas with his coaching decisions and his winning record shows those results. As a matter of fact, Mack and his current coaches should be rewarded for what they have been able to do. No, I don't live in west Texas and have the opportunity to go to the same Church as Colt or have been fortunate enough to see him in HS ball as he set all of the state records. But I did go to Tech and that doesn't diminish the fact that I want him to win ALL of his games - even against Tech! --------------- Sam from San Saba, maybe you should read the above before judging me as "one of those rabid, spittle-spewing fans." Every day I vote for Colt, Ship, Quan, Muck and their team mates for whatever honor they are up for and I have attended every game or gamewatching party for YEARS, so yes Go Horns ... AND GoColtGo! Sorry if this is too long but I'm passionate about Colt, his teammates, & Longhorn football and if that makes me "one of those rabid, spittle-spewing fans" - so be it. Peace

With what we have seen against Mizzou, this team has grown to the point where, they are playing traditional football and dominating at it. Against Mizzou, we saw the I formation, Zone read, Shotgun and all other traditional formations executed to perfection. We saw Cris Obgbanaya run all over Mizzou, Vondrell McGee showing that he had wheels as well and Fozzy there to take a 35 yard run as well. We say Brandon Collins be the go to guy for McCoy during Blitzes, Malcom Williams making a catch that I am still dreaming of and Then John Chiles chipping in with a 51 yarder to Dan Bucknor. Then there was McCoy, Shipley and Quan, showing why they are the leaders of the team. An Offensive line that protected McCoy (0 Sacks) and a Defensive line that will probably live in the Nightmares of Daniel Chase for a long time. I think you are beginning to get where I am going. This Texas team is the most complete football team I have seen since 2005, and it will take any team, execute their plays to perfection to come close to beating it. As I see it now, after watching the Texas Tech Vs Texas A&M Game (Texas A&M hung in there till the third quarter.. Texas A&M!!!), and the Oklahoma State Baylor game (a record setting day for the Baylor QB), I have strong doubts on the capability of these teams to come close to beating Texas.. Now, I dare to dream

Lisa, ACU is loaded with talent this season and Chance, a 6-2, 190-pound redshirt freshman has only suited up for two games, I believe. I'm afraid he's not going to catch a lot of passes this year because the Wildcats are blowing everyone away, and by the time he would get into the game, it would be bad form to keep throwing. ACU is 5-0, ranked No. 3 nationally and averaging 54 points a game, while only allowing about 14. They play in Abilene at 7 p.m. Saturday, so I wouldn't be surprised if Colt caught a ride with his parents to see the game after the Red River Shootout earlier in the day.

That's so interesting what Lynn had to say about how the Reporter-News doesn't do a good job of covering Colt McCoy. Let me quote: "After all he is basically from Abilene having grown up in Tuscola. Abilene carried all the football news about Jim Ned and still does. What is the deal? Are the sports writers for the Abilene Reporter News all Aggies?" I thought this was VERY interesting, especially this portion, "basically from Abilene." There is a young man who actually is from Abilene. His name is Case Keenum. He is the starting quarterback for the University of Houston Cougars. He led Wylie to a state championship in 2004 and deep into the playoffs two other years. You might remember him. Well, he's leading the nation in three statistical categories for quarterbacks and in the top five in several others. All right there with McCoy, and Sam Bradford, Chase Daniels and Graham Harrell. All of these players are terrific players and student-athletes and I think the Reporter-News does an adequate job of reporting on them. But one of the AR-N sports writers told me that the Corpus Christi newspaper actually designs the college football pages for the Reporter-News. So they really can't help it, that although Keenum regularly comes back to Abilene to do clinics and works with Fellowship of Christian Athlete events, they can't even get even an Associated Press game story about the latest Houston game. Did you all know that Houston defeated a Top 25-ranked opponent, on the road for the first time since 1984? Does everybody in Abilene know this? That the Corpus Christi newspaper designs the college sports page you read every Sunday? I think it's a real shame that just because there are lots of Aggies, Longhorns and Red Raiders who make their living in Abilene, that this should mean that some home-town player should not get as much press as other (no-so) home-town players get just because there are less graduates from his college residing in Abilene. News is news, no matter who is buying (or saying they are buying) your newspaper. The whole Wylie community wants to know how Keenum is doing. I can't think of another Wylie grad who has made such an impact on the college football scene (please correct me if I'm wrong). Well, people, all I can say is read the Houston Chronicle and espn.com if you really want to find out.

Danny from GoColtGo.com said:

Lynn, I'll pass your comments along to the sports department, but you need to know it's sometimes all about timing. If the UT game had been at 2 p.m. instead of at 6 p.m., there probably would've been a more prominent display, but it was over close to the front page deadline and as all the other pages were being finished. It's a madhouse down there on Saturday night during football season - trust me, as a former Sports Editor, I know. Also, I know they get regular complaints from Aggies that the sports department likes UT the best as well. As a rule of thumb, I believe they try to give consistent coverage to Tech, Texas, A&M and Baylor.

Danny: I have had several unhappy friends calling about how the Abilene Reporter News does not cover the Texas Longhorns football team very well. They said that this weekend when the Aggies got killed they had a huge article on them and one little article on the Longhorns even though Colt broke an incredible record. (That was not even mentioned.) I am astonished that they do not report more favorably about Colt and the Texas team. After all he is basically from Abilene having grown up in Tuscola. Abilene carried all the football news about Jim Ned and still does. What is the deal? Are the sports writers for the Abilene Reporter News all Aggies? Please help.

I had a hard time staying awake for the whole game last night but I managed. The announcers for last night's game were talking about Colt, (where he was raised, went to high school etc. and they were talking about Tuscola not having a Dairy Queen. They also said the mayor of Tuscola also operated the funeral home. The announcers found that amusing. You could really tell that they had done their homework on Colt, his family and Tuscola. Colt had another good game and we enjoyed it even though it was late. It was after all Saturday night though. I was a little ticked that it was six minutes into the game before we could start watching it on TV.
