Cowboys look at University of Houston as possible
training site
HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says his team
is considering Houston as a site for summer training camp.
University of Houston officials gave a tour two weeks ago to
Cowboys operations director Bruce Mays and to Cowboys marketing
director Doreen Bice, Houston television station KRIV reported
Thursday night.
Jones confirmed the Oct. 28 visit.
"I think the fact that we do have a lot of Cowboy fans
there and the fact there's no NFL in Houston right now would give
rise to would we have a training camp in that vicinity. We are
... giving that some consideration," Jones said.
University of Houston athletic director Chet Gladchuck says
it might not work because of conflicts the summer camp would have
with the University of Houston's own football preparations and
with other events scheduled on campus.
"But it's not yet a dead issue, and in the meantime we
are waiting to hear back from the Cowboys," Gladchuck said.
"Basically, we just were investigating the logistics to
see if it made any sense. We had some discussions which I thought
were very constructive and very positive, and it was a delight
to have them on our campus," Gladchuck said.
Mays said the evaluation process is continuing for a new summer
camp home. The Cowboys' arrangement with St. Edward's College
in Austin ended this year.
"The University of Houston has great people. Everything
they have to offer is adequate. Their athletic facility, of all
the college facilities I have looked at, is as nice as I've seen,"
Mays said.
