Aikman suffers concussion against Eagles

By The Associated Press

The Dallas Cowboys lost Troy Aikman in the first quarter, then lost the game in the final minute.

Aikman suffered a mild concussion and strained neck when he was sacked early in the Cowboys' game at Philadelphia on Sunday. The Eagles went on to win 13-12 on Rodney Peete's 8-yard touchdown pass to Chad Lewis with 45 seconds left.

After he was hurt, Aikman was replaced by Wade Wilson and didn't return. Aikman said team doctors wouldn't let him play, even though he felt he could.

"I felt I could have gone back in in the second half," Aikman said. "I have every intention of playing next week."

Aikman was sacked in the first quarter by linebacker William Thomas. As he was falling to the ground, Aikman banged helmets with former Cowboy Jimmie Jones, bending the quarterback's neck.

Aikman got up and walked toward the huddle, then went down on one knee. After a few minutes, he was helped off the field.

Under constant pressure from the Eagles, Aikman completed only 2 of 6 passes for 21 yards. Philadelphia sacked him twice, pressured him three times and hit him four times.

Another top quarterback, Jacksonville's Mark Brunell, also was injured Sunday. He dislocated a knuckle on his throwing hand late in the fourth quarter of a 23-17 overtime loss to Pittsburgh.

San Francisco center Chris Dalman injured his left ankle and knee in the third quarter against New Orleans and did not return.

Denver lost starting guard Brian Habib with a lower back injury in the first quarter against Buffalo. The Bills lost their leading special teams tackler, Mike Pike, with a knee injury.

St. Louis backup safety Gerald McBurrows left the game against Kansas City in the second quarter with an injured right knee and did not return.

Minnesota running back Robert Smith sprained an ankle against Tampa Bay, but the injury did not appear to be serious. Bucs tight end Jackie Harris suffered a groin pull and sat out the second half.

Indianapolis linebacker Quentin Coryatt was helped off the field late in the first quarter against San Diego after bruising his left Achilles tendon. Chargers cornerback Mark Montreuil sprained his right knee and San Diego linebacker Toran James strained his right knee.

Several Oakland Raiders were injured in their game against Seattle. Safety Dan Land dislocated his left elbow, running back Napoleon Kaufman bruised his right knee and cornerback Lionel Washington suffered a pulled hamstring.

Seahawks rookie offensive tackle Walter Jones had to leave the game in the fourth quarter when he re-sprained his left ankle.
