Deion may have broken bone
By the Associated Press (Jan. 7, 1997)
IRVING - Michael Irvin's collarbone isn't broken after all,
but the bone around Deion Sanders' right eye might be, the Dallas
Cowboys said Monday.
Irvin injured his right shoulder after making a catch on the
Cowboys' second offensive play in the 26-17 loss to Carolina on
Sunday. The team originally said he suffered a sprained shoulder
but later changed the diagnosis to a broken collarbone.
After a cat scan on Monday, doctors reversed field and called
the injury a sprain, said team spokesman Brett Daniels.
"They said they suspected that (broken collarbone) but
until they had the tests today they couldn't confirm it,"
Daniels said.
Sanders was injured late in the game and spent the night in
a Charlotte, N.C., hospital with what was believed to be a head
injury.
Daniels said tests on Monday found no head injury. Sanders
returned to Dallas and was expected to be examined by a specialist
because of what might be a fractured orbital bone in his right
eye.
A time for that examination hadn't been set by Monday, Daniels
said.
