Irvin's Indictment Clouds His Future | By MARK BABINECK

(April 3, 1996 © 1996 Associated Press. All rights reserved)

....DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Cowboys All-Pro receiver Michael Irvin has spent his career basking in the spotlight since his days as a brash college star at Miami.
...That spotlight has become a glare since Irvin and two topless dancers were indicted on drug charges Monday stemming from a March 4 incident in a motel room in which police found cocaine and marijuana.
...Irvin, 30, is one of the team's most popular players on a roster full of stars. He is also known as being among the most flamboyant Cowboys, and his love of fashion led to his creation of the "Masterpeace Ragz" line of clothing.
...Irvin posted a $5,500 bond Monday afternoon and will await trial along with Angela Renee Beck, 22, and Jasmine J. Nabwangu, 21. No trial date has been set.
...Irvin and Beck could face two to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for felony possession of 4 or more grams of cocaine. The felony indictment against Nabwangu was for a lesser charge of possessing less than a gram of cocaine, punishable by up to two years in prison.
...Irvin's friend and Masterpeace Ragz associate, former Cowboys tight end Alfredo Roberts, also was in the motel room but not charged.
...At a news conference today, Roberts apologized to his family, friends and public.
..."There's not many things I regret in my life, but I regret finding myself in this position," he said.
..."I think if I'm guilty of anything it has been poor judgment."
...When was asked whether he had used or uses drugs, Roberts replied, "absolutely not." He also said he received no preferential treatment.
..."I was treated the same as anybody else," he said.
...Furthermore, his attorney Don Tittle said, "It would surprise me if he were called by the state as a witness."
...Regarding Irvin's state of mind, Roberts said, "This is something he knows he just has to go through."
...He also said their relationship has grown stronger during the grand jury probe.
...Roberts accompanied Irvin as he left the Dallas County jail Monday.
..."I love him with all my heart," Roberts said among a swirl of reporters and photographers.
...Some fans who have watched him became the team's all-time leading receiver are ready to see him and the Cowboys part ways.
..."I expect for the Cowboys to release him," fan David Cohen said. "I hope they would release him or try to trade him."
...Another fan, Mike Rader, expects to see the receiver known as the "Playmaker" back on the field for his 10th season with the Cowboys.
..."They'll use the reasoning that it's a first offense and they'll fine him, or maybe he'll get some probation," Rader said. "I don't think the justice system would throw the maximum sentence at him."
...None of the three indicted Monday has a criminal record.
...The Cowboys responded with the low-key approach they have taken when other players have had brushes with the law.
..."This has been a difficult week for the Dallas Cowboys organization and we want to express our deep concern for the entire Irvin family," owner Jerry Jones said in a prepared statement. "This is a matter that is in the hands of the authorities, and we hope that it will be resolved as quickly and constructively as possible."
...The NFL said it will "closely monitor" the case. However it is resolved, the league requires players implicated in drug-related crimes to undergo a confidential evaluation by independent doctors.
...If the league enrolls him in a mandatory treatment program, Irvin could face 10 drug tests per month for two years.
...At the time of the incident, police arrested only Beck because she told them she owned the drugs.
...But Fort Worth television station KXAS has reported that sources say Irvin's fingerprints were found on dinner plates on which drugs were found. The station also has reported that a glass container with cocaine residue was found in Irvin's overnight bag.
..."Obviously (the indictment is) a shock for all the Dallas Cowboys fans and players," Cowboys linebacker Bill Bates said at the team's Irving headquarters. "He's definitely like a brother to a lot of us on the team. I'm all behind Mike and all behind what he's going to do.
..."I feel this is going to make him a better man."
