Irvin to announce football future before camp
By Bart Hubbuch / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING, Texas - Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin has decided
about his playing future and intends to announce it before the
July 18 start of training camp, his attorney said Monday.
What that decision is, Peter Ginsberg isn't saying.
"I can't tell you which way he's going with it,"
said Ginsberg, a Washington, D.C., attorney representing Irvin
and Cowboys tackle Erik Williams in their lawsuits against KXAS-TV
(Channel 5) and the Dallas Police Department.
"All I can say is that he'll make it known in the next
week to week and a half. He wants to do it before training camp
because he loves his teammates," Ginsberg said.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Monday that the club spoke to
Irvin Saturday and is confident the five-time Pro Bowl selection
will return to football.
"I fully expect him to be at camp," Jones said. He
would not comment on whether Irvin had informed the Cowboys of
a decision.
Irvin's playing status has been in limbo since June 4, when
he announced at an overflow news conference that he had lost his
"love for the game" and was contemplating retirement.
Irvin, who has missed both the Cowboys' off-season mini-camps
after requesting a trade in January, has been embroiled in a series
of off-the-field controversies over the past 15 months. Among
them were a no-contest plea for cocaine possession and a five-game
NFL suspension for conduct detrimental to the league.
