Cowboys lose Schwantz to San Francisco
IRVING, Texas (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys won't match the contract
offer restricted free agent Jim Schwantz received from the San
Francisco 49ers, the team announced Friday.
The linebacker made the Pro Bowl last season as a special teams
player.
"We wish Jim nothing but the best," said Cowboys
owner and general manager Jerry Jones.
"We knew his performance would elevate his standing in
the marketplace. Jim was a solid contributor to our team and someone
we would have liked to have retained," he said.
The 49ers said Monday they had offered Schwantz a four-year
deal. Details of the offer were not released.
Schwantz spent three seasons with the Cowboys as linebacker
and special teams performer. He is best remembered by the 49ers
for delivering the hit that gave San Francisco quarterback Steve
Young his second concussion of the 1996 season.
