Cowboys' Newton didn't appear before grand
jury today
DALLAS (AP) -- A Dallas County grand jury took no action Tuesday
in the sexual assault case against Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman
Nate Newton.
A 31-year-old woman who accused Newton of raping her at her
Grand Prairie mobile home June 15 testified before the panel.
However, prosecutors agreed to delay appearances by Newton
and other defense witnesses until next Tuesday, said Norm Kinne,
first assistant district attorney.
Newton's attorney, Howard Shapiro of Plano, said he requested
the delay to provide time for him to round up witnesses and prepare
his evidence.
"We have five witnesses to testify, including Nate. We
have documents we have to present. We have scientific evidence,"
he said.
Shapiro declined to say whether that scientific evidence was
an analysis of an answering machine tape of a purported conversation
between the woman and Newton.
The unidentified woman's attorney, David Cole of Dallas, had
said he gave prosecutors a recorded telephone conversation in
which Newton seemingly acknowledges to the woman that some type
of misconduct took place.
Newton, through his attorney, has denied the sexual assault
accusation.
The woman and Newton have confirmed that they had a lengthy
relationship.
