Robert Newhouse to help Cowboys players
IRVING, Texas (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys once again looked to
their past to help clean up their future, giving former running
back Robert Newhouse the additional duties of director of player
assistance and development.
Newhouse, who will have the daily responsibility of coordinating
all player assistance programs, will work with Calvin Hill, another
former Cowboys running back who rejoined the team recently as
a consultant for player development and assistance.
"He is someone who knows how to engage young people and
effect their lives in a positive way," Cowboys owner Jerry
Jones said Saturday.
Newhouse, the team's fifth-leading career rusher, has been
part of the front office since 1989. He began on the team's sales
and promotions staff and has been the director of procurement
for the team and Texas Stadium the last two seasons. He'll keep
that job.
"After a thorough search for qualified candidates to fill
this role, we found that the very best person was right here within
the organization," Hill said in a news release. "Robert
Newhouse ... knows this organization and this community and the
challenges that come with being a Dallas Cowboy."
Newhouse was a second-round pick in 1972 from Houston. He led
the team in rushing in 1975, a season that ended with a Super
Bowl loss to Pittsburgh, and he was a starter on the 1977 world
championship team. He retired after the 1983 season.
