Cowboys' Jay Novacek put on injured reserve, out for season

By the Associated Press (Jan. 4, 1997)

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys put tight end Jay Novacek on the injured reserve list Friday, meaning he will not be eligible to play in any of their postseason contests, including the one on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

Novacek had missed the whole season with a degenerative disk problem in his back. He had been trying to get well for the playoffs but experienced some pain trying to run on level ground and the Cowboys decided his season is over.

Dallas announced four inactives for the Carolina game, including defensive end Charles Haley, cornerback Wendell Davis and offensive linemen John Flannery and Tony Hutson.
