Former Dallas Cowboys public relations director
dies
DALLAS (AP) - Former Dallas Cowboys public relation director
Doug Todd has died of a heart attack in Wheeling, Ill. He was
54.
Todd, the Cowboys' spokesman from 1971 to 1989, suffered the
heart attack Wednesday due to complications resulting from a lung
biopsy last week.
"What a great guy he was," said former coach Tom
Landry. "That's such a shame. He did a great job for us,
and it seems like was there forever."
During his 18-year tenure, the team rose to international prominence
and became known as "America's Team" after winning two
Super Bowls.
"Doug meant a lot to the Cowboys," Landry told The
Dallas Morning News. "He was a big, important part of the
team's operation throughout the 1970s era."
Todd left the Cowboys in 1989 shortly after Jerry Jones purchased
the team from H.R. "Bum" Bright. Todd, a native of Oklahoma
City, later served in public relations for the Arlington Park
horse racing track near Chicago and with Second Harvest, an Illinois
food bank.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Todd, of Wheeling, Ill.,
daughter Julie Besser of Memphis, Tenn.; son Duke Todd of New
York City and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community
Presbyterian Church in Mount Prospect, Ill.
