Fourth-year coach Darryl Cash set the
goal of 2002 as making the playoffs. The Anson football team did
just that and made a strong run before falling in the third round
to Crane, 24-3.
After having a taste of the postseason, the 10 returning lettermen
from that group will be fighting hard to get there again. The
Tigers will be returning five offensive starters and six defensive
starters from that playoff team.
The biggest strength for Anson this season, according to Cash,
is good senior leadership. Of the 22 players listed on the preseason
roster, 15 are seniors. Just two positions on the starting team,
offense or defense, are non-seniors.
Santos Seballos is one of those non-senior starters. Seballos
was selected to the first-team all-district squad as an offensive
lineman following last season. He was a second-team defensive
lineman. The 5-8, 200-pound junior will be playing center. The
other non-senior starter is junior Zack Haley, a 5-8, 155-pound
cornerback.
Marcus McWilliams, who returns as a two-way star for Anson,
made the all-district team as a first-team defensive lineman and
a second-team offensive lineman. Coach Cash expects McWilliams,
5-10, 200 pounds, to be starting on both sides of the ball again
this year.
Kris Norman is the final all-district returnee. Norman, who
pulled in three interceptions last season, was selected as a first-team
defensive back. The 5-8, 155-pound senior will be in the secondary
again this season, splitting his time with the offense as a probable
starter at running back.
While the team is sound as far as senior leadership is concerned,
Cash knows it must stay healthy in order to have a legitimate
shot at the playoffs. Citing depth as the teams biggest
weakness, the coach lists just five players on the roster not
on the starting lineup.
Five of the starters are two-way players, so the Tigers cant
afford any injuries.
