The Breckenridge football team will
field a very young group for the 2003 campaign, but returns several
key seniors who should provide quality leadership.
Only six of fourth-year coach Blake Feldts projected
starters return from last season, three on each side of the ball.
There are just 11 seniors on the entire preseason roster.
One of those seniors, though, is fourth-year varsity starter
Josh Griffith.
Starting his freshman year as a defensive end on the varsity squad
for the Bucks, Griffith has since moved to a lineman for both
the offense and defense. Griffith commands respect with his seniority
but also earns that respect through his contributions, which earned
him a second-team all-district nomination last season.
Larry Huitt is another key leader for this young group. Huitt
is entering his third year at the varsity level, and will play
as both wide receiver and defensive back.
Senior Jesse Cowan will wear the green and white again this
year. Cowan was selected as a second-team all-district player
at wide receiver in 2002. Cowan will also spent time as a defensive
back.
Jeremy Heatley will step into the hole left after the graduation
of Eric Mendez at quarterback. Heatley, 6-2, 180 pounds, will
be one of what coach Feldt estimates to be nine or 10 sophomores
on the varsity roster.
Austin Clay will try to take some pressure off the young quarterback,
returning as the leading rusher for Breckenridge in 2002. Clay,
a two-way standout for the Bucks, will also play on defense in
2003 at linebacker.
Edgar Palacios will join him on the defense, which Feldt says
has improved markedly in overall speed. Palacios will again be
suiting up as a defensive lineman.
Feldt said he knows his team is going to be very young,
but also said that he has seen great work habits from
them and is confident they will be prepared for the season.
