Hard-working Bronte seniors eager to get results from effort

DISTRICT 15-A

By Troy Shockley
Reporter-News Staff Writer
August 24, 2003

For the second straight year, Bronte head coach Rocky Rawls could count on one hand the number of seniors lost to graduation. Also for the second straight year, 18 lettermen return to the lineup.

With just two seniors gone from last season, Rawls will see nine offensive starters and 10 defensive starters back for the 2003 campaign.

It has been a rough couple of years for this group of senior Longhorns. As sophomores in 2001, the team finished with a 3-7 overall record and was 2-4 in District 10-A. Last year they went just 2-8 overall and 1-4 in their new District 15-A.

Bronte was switched to the new district following the University Interscholastic League’s 2002 realignment.

Rather than taking a laissez-faire attitude from the two-year struggle, Rawls said the 2003 Longhorns are hungry for a turnaround this season. Citing the number of seniors and their experience as his team’s biggest strength, he said this group of players works hard and they will play hard.

Three seniors leading Bronte’s drive for its first playoff appearance since 2000 are Cody Lee, Joseph Israel and Tyson Baker.

Lee, 5-9, 145 pounds, was a selection to the first-team all-district squad at safety.

Perhaps the team’s biggest leader and weapon, he will remain in the secondary this season and also is expected to start at quarterback. The senior led the ’Horns in 2002 in passing, rushing and on defense.

Israel, 5-9, 150 pounds, was a second-team all-district selection as an offensive lineman.

And Baker, 5-9, 160 pounds, was a second-team selection in the secondary.

Other returning seniors expected to start are Garrett Fiveash at running back/cornerback, Justin Moore at guard/defensive tackle, B.J. Hall and Justin Minjarez at wide receiver/cornerback, Scott Snyder at offensive/defensive tackle, Josh Eubanks at guard/linebacker and Jesse Rodriquez at wide receiver/cornerback.
