Coahoma aiming to reclaim district crown

DISTRICT 3-2A

By Troy Shockley
Reporter-News Staff Writer
August 24, 2003

Last year the Coahoma Bulldogs were faced with overcoming the loss of 20 players.

This season should be much different for fifth-year coach Robert Wood, who will see many familiar faces.

After returning just four 2001 starters last season, the Bulldogs struggled to a 2-8 overall record, and went just 1-5 in District 3-2A, only one year after winning the district championship. This season looks to be much more promising; coach Wood expects a total of 14 returning starters from that 2002 squad.

One of those returning players who should provide quality numbers for the Bulldogs is Kelby Kemper. The 6-3, 205-pound senior managed to tally 611 yards in just six games last season on 140 carries, an average of 4.4 yards per attempt.

Quarterback Sam Tindol will again be leading the Bulldogs’ offensive attack. Tindol, also named to the all-district team as a cornerback last season, hit 57-of-134 passes for a total of 600 yards and will again be playing on both sides of the ball.

First-team all-district defensive end Clay Grant will be back for Coahoma as well. Grant led the team with 50 tackles last season.

Two-way tackle Sammy Sevey, a first-team all-district selection as a tackle on both offense and defense, will be back in the red and white, as will all-district honorable mention selection Adrian Abrego at cornerback.

With some changes in the offensive system, and an improved passing game, Wood is optimistic about the upcoming season. Citing that experience, especially evident at the skill positions, is the team’s biggest strength, Wood is concerned about overall team depth, but feels if the team can stay healthy, it has a good chance at reclaiming the district championship.

The Bulldogs will take their first step toward that goal at Reagan County Friday in their season opener. Coahoma will face Seagraves in its first district game of the year, Oct. 10 at home.
