Colorado City will be returning 22 lettermen
from the 2002 season, in which the Wolves finished second place
in District 3-2A and reached the playoffs for the third straight
year.
While the number of returning lettermen outweighs the group
that left (13), several in that departing class were keys to the
Wolves success.
Quarterback Jon Spear, who led the team with 204 yards per
game, left with two-way tackle B.J. Graham to Angelo State; Josh
Ritchey, a player who, according to second-year head coach Frank
Johnson, showed a lot of character and leadership that is
invaluable to a team, was also lost to graduation.
Seventeen of the 22 returning lettermen are now seniors, however,
only four of those are returning starters. While not all seniors
have experienced a starting role, they have put in enough time
with the team that they know what to expect.
We will contend for the playoffs if our line develops
and we develop leaders to keep our focus, Johnson said.
We will not contend if we do not stay focused on football.
Expect one of the emerging alphas in this pack to be potential
all-state player Jacobie Russell. Last season Russell was a first-team
running back on the all-district team, all-South Plains team,
All-Big Country team and all-West Texas team.
The 5-11, 185-pound senior rushed for 1,413 yards on 207 carries,
for an average of 6.8 yards per attempt. Russell also showed last
season that he isnt limited to running the ball, hitting
2-for-4 passes for 65 yards and catching two passes for 40 yards.
Another potential leader for the Wolves is two-way standout
Patrick Spear. The senior was second-team all-district as a wide
receiver, and first-team defensive back. The 5-11, 155-pound Spear
had seven catches for 103 yards as a receiver and tallied 41 tackles,
17 assists, two interceptions, three broken-up passes and a fumble
recovery on defense for Colorado City last season.
Kenneth Scott, who surprised the district last season as a
freshman who rushed his way to a second-team all-district selection,
will also be back. The 5-11, 205-pound fullback rushed for 473
yards on 73 carries.
