The Comanche Indians have 11 seniors
among 13 lettermen expected to return this season, and that leadership
will be needed if Comanche is to climb to the top of the District
6-3A rankings.
This will be just the second season in District 6-3A for Comanche,
which was moved up from Class 2A in the 2002 season following
realignment.
In a district that traditionally comes down to a battle between
Wylie and Ballinger, Comanche finished in third place last season,
its first in the habitually tough group of teams. The Tribes
only district losses during the 2002 campaign came to Ballinger
(33-0) and Wylie (41-0).
Coach Malcom Moerbe is hoping the memory of those two losses,
along with the experience of his returning players, will aid the
Indians in their quest for a second district title in four years.
In this extremely tough district we had better be ready
to play every Friday night, Moerbe said. If we can
do that, we will be right in the middle of it.
The teams previous championship was won while Comanche was
in District 10-2A, in 2000.
One senior who will remember those losses is quarterback Brady
Tyson. The 6-2, 205-pound Tyson threw for 731 yards last season,
and was named to the all-district team as a punter. The 731 yards
was a slight drop-off from the previous season, when Tyson tallied
873 passing yards.
Weston Franco, a 5-9, 175-pound senior, rushed for 704 yards
last season, 91 yards more than the 2001 leading rusher, Junior
Moya. Franco was also a 2002 all-district player for Comanche.
A third returning all-district player is 5-10, 165-pound Aaron
Turner. Turner, who had 83 tackles for the Tribe in 2002, will
lead the defense along with fellow senior Zane Barnes, who added
81 tackles on the year.
Other returning seniors will be Clint Ferrell at tight end/safety,
Guthrie Alexander at tackle, Roy Banda at guard/tackle, Matthew
Byrd at fullback/linebacker, Keith Kimmel at tight end/cornerback
and Seth Warren at fullback/defensive end.
The Tribe will begin their quest for the district title on
Oct. 10 at Early.
