Despite losing 16 varsity players to
graduation, Dublin expects to be in good shape thanks to the return
of several key players and a stronger defense.
In all, 20 lettermen will be returning to the ranks of the
Lions, including five offensive starters and six defensive starters.
The Lions, who are coming off of a 5-5 season that had a 1-4
district mark, hope that the 2003 season will end a playoff drought
that stretches back to 1994.
Third-year coach Dwayne Ross, who is 8-12 at Dublin, will rely
heavily on returning first-team all-district selection Ted DeVries.
The 6-1, 250-pound senior end, also named first-team all-district
his sophomore season, recorded 91 tackles and 14 quarterback sacks
in the 2002 campaign. DeVries also added four fumble recoveries
for Dublin.
Junior Ryan Hammer will help anchor the secondary again this
year. Hammer, a 5-8, 155-pound defensive back, pulled in four
interceptions last season. Hammer will also share time with fellow
senior Justin Carpenter and sophomore James Johnson at running
back.
Scott Adams, a 5-11, 195-pound senior, will help fill out the
already deep Lion backfield.
Adams may see the most action running the ball.
Last season he was a first-team all-district selection, rushing
for 785 yards on 117 carries, an average of 6.7 yards per attempt.
Adams scored nine times for the Lions.
Other returning players include 6-4, 225-pound Rick Lisso at
tight end and 5-10, 175-pound senior free safety Preston Keilers,
who should also start at wide receiver.
While the defense and ground game appear to be in good shape,
Ross lists inexperience at quarterback and on the offensive line
as two of his teams biggest weaknesses.
Attempting to ease some of those worries will be newcomer Miles
Stone. Stone, a 5-10, 160-pound sophomore will be the signal-caller
for Dublin. And, while the experience may be lacking, size does
not. Dublins offensive line averages a whopping 242.5 pounds.
