The Hamlin football team not only had
to learn a new system from a new coach in 2002, following the
2001 realignment it had to learn the landscape of a new district
as well.
One year later, the Pied Pipers expect to be much improved
in the now more familiar District 9-A. The Pied Pipers finished
with a respectable 6-4 overall record and 2-3 in district play,
putting them in fourth place.
Second-year coach Greg Althof brought in an offense that was
more open than Hamlin had used in the past, and thinks this years
squad will be better prepared, having spent a year under his program.
The 2003 Pied Pipers will have a year under their belts
with the new system that was brought in, he said.
He feels that this is the teams biggest strength for
the upcoming season, and says the lack of depth is probably the
biggest obstacle it will have to overcome.
Returning just 10 lettermen from the 2002 season, the Pied
Pipers will have five players on each side of the ball with starting
experience.
One of the returning starters on offense will be senior John
Barrera. The 6-0, 190-pound running back was a first-team all-district
selection following his 893-yard season. Barrera, who achieved
his total yardage on just 118 carries, was also named to the Abilene
Reporter News All-Big Country team.
Other returning standouts for Hamlin will be Roman Johnson,
a second-team all-district selection for his play in the secondary
and Adrian Barrera, a first-team selection to the all-district
team and also an All-Big Country player.
Adrian, a 6-1, 195-pound junior, led the defense last season
with an incredible 160 solo and assisted tackles. He will also
see time on the offense as a running back.
Also on offense, the top candidate to take over at quarterback
is Jason Hertel.
Two offensive tackles will be back for the Pied Pipers. Again
playing on the line will be 6-1, 230-pound Angel Montanez and
6-2, 190-pound sophomore Wade Lakey.
