Only one member of the 2002 coaching
staff will be on the sidelines during the 2003 football season
in Munday. The Moguls have a new head coach, offensive coordinator
and defensive coordinator. Kelly Spiller is taking over head coaching
duties in Munday for the upcoming campaign, along with offensive
coach John Keller and defensive coach Ronny Lowrance. The only
holdover from last season is assistant coach Pat Corcoran.
Dont let the newness of this coaching staff fool you
into thinking that Spiller is naive. Spiller is well aware of
the difficulties facing his team in the tightly contested District
9-A.
Our district will be competitive top to bottom,
Spiller said. The winner will be the most consistent start
to finish. There could very easily be a team with one district
loss that does not make the playoffs.
Consistent is what the Moguls have been over the past two seasons,
reaching the playoffs in both. In 2001 the Moguls fell to ODonnell,
14-7 in the bi-district round, and 39-22 to Petrolia in last seasons
first round.
Spiller will have back the services of eight returning lettermen,
with seven positions on each offense and defense occupied by a
returning starter.
The biggest change after the coaching switch is the move being
made by Junior Sanchez.
The senior will be moving from tight end/defensive end to quarterback/defensive
back. Sanchez, 5-8, 140 pounds, will make the move to replace
the graduated Jeffery Toliver.
While Sanchez does have varsity experience, it is not as a
quarterback and coach Spiller lists that inexperience as one of
the teams biggest weaknesses.
The biggest strength for the Moguls, though, will be their
speed. Dustin Flye is returning for Munday for the 2003 season.
Flye did just that last season, rushing for more than 1,000 yards.
The senior was a selection to the first-team all-district squad
in 2002.
Jerome Flye, also a first-team all-district selection, will
again be a leader defensively for the Moguls. Jerome recorded
more than 100 tackles on his way to the all-district team.
