The Roscoe Plowboys, who are coming
off an 11-2 year, are looking to repeat as the District 15-A champions
this season and advance deep into the state playoffs.
But, if they are to do so, it will have to be without all-state
player Bo Young and 14 other players who were lost to graduation.
As a result, Roscoe will only have three lettermen returning from
last years area championship team. This marks the second
consecutive year the Plowboys have lost 15 seniors.
The Plowboys went 5-0 in district and fell to Petrolia 33-3
in the regional quarterfinals of the 2002 playoffs. Roscoe has
advanced to the postseason for five consecutive years.
Coach Wes Williams, head coach since 1998 with a 51-11 record,
credits his teams successes to their strong work ethic.
The teams major weakness is a lack of depth on both sides
of the ball, resulting in many two-way players.
Despite losing Young, the Plowboys will be returning senior
FIRST/SECOND-team all-state defensive end Cale Smith this year.
Smith is a returning first-team all-district and All-Big Country
player.
Smith, who suits up for varsity football for the third year,
is a two-way standout for the Plowboys. In addition to rushing
for 721 yards, he had 40 solo tackles, 32 assists on tackles,
one interception and 12 sacks. Luis Villa, a FIRST/SECOND-team
all-district cornerback last season, had three interceptions.
Offensive standout Isaac Rangel rushed for 306 yards at fullback
and is expected to help Smith carry the offensive load.
The Plowboys will have five players starting on both sides
of the ball this season. Rangel will play fullback/defensive end;
Villa plays wide receiver/cornerback; Donald Kimbrell lines up
at offensive/defensive lineman; junior Smith will play quarterback/linebacker;
and Tate Mayfield will play on the offensive and defensive lines.
