Rookie coach hoping for Jackets’ fifth title in 11 years

DISTRICT 8-4A

By Troy Shockley
Reporter-News Staff Writer
August 24, 2003

One could make a strong case for dubbing Stephenville the Class 4A ‘Team of the ’90s.’

Head coach Chad Morris hopes 2003 will be the first step toward the domination of a new decade.

The Yellow Jackets, who have reached the playoffs each year since 1989, claimed four state titles in the 1990s (1993-94 and 1998-99), and may be built for their first title of the new century with nine returning all-district selections from 2002.

Morris, in his first year as head coach, said defense will be the strongest piece of this year’s team, adding “The defense should be as good as the defense in 1999.”

Leading the defense in 2003 will be senior Cody Payne. The 6-1, 205-pound linebacker earned a spot on both the all-district and all-state teams in 2002.

All-district honorable mention defensive back Corey Kennyon, first-team linebacker Michael Viotto, first-team defensive lineman Robert Garcia and second-team defensive backs Eli Cruz and Cy Williams will join Payne on defense.

In all, 15 lettermen will return for the Yellow Jackets, including three offensive starters and seven starters on defense.

The offensive stars include Conner Elms, Marshall Doloff and Cruz.

Elms, 6-2, 205 pounds, will make the move to quarterback this season. The senior played at wide receiver in the previous campaign, but will make the change to fill the hole made after the graduation of star QB Kevin Kolb.

There will be several position changes for the 2003 season that Morris has made, following the loss of 21 seniors.

Cruz will move from defensive back to running back; Doloff will now be a lineman on the offense instead of defense as will Caleb Hooper.

Morris is concerned about inexperience on the offensive line and hopes that defensive experience and his skill position players will be able to give the line time to gain its footing.

He said if the team “can grow through its tough non-district schedule, remain healthy and give the offensive line time to gain confidence, this team could be playing late in December.”
