Quickness, attitude key for young Throckmorton team’s success

DISTRICT 12-A

By Troy Shockley
Reporter-News Staff Writer
August 24, 2003

After the graduation of 11 seniors, Throckmorton’s football team will be much younger when it takes the field this year. The Greyhounds will return just seven lettermen from the squad that went 6-4 overall and 3-2 in District 12-A. Three offensive starters are expected back and the defense will see four returning starters.

Coach Danny Davis, in just his second year as a head coach, knows that the inexperience of his young team will be its biggest weakness, but also said that the quickness and attitude he has seen from players will be a big strength.

Another strength will be the return of first-team all-district running back Monty Scrogum.

The 5-8, 160-pound senior rushed for 803 yards on 125 carries, an average of nearly 6.5 yards per attempt. Scrogum, who also scored nine touchdowns on the ground last year, was one of a handful of non-seniors on that season’s starting lineup and will provide quality leadership for the younger players this year.

Devin Rankin is back on special teams for the ’Hounds. Rankin, 5-9, 160 pounds, was selected as a kick returner for the second-team all-district squad in 2002 and will also be a potential team leader for Throckmorton.

Joshua Torrez was a standout on defense last season for Throckmorton and will again wear the purple and white. Starting on the varsity roster as just a sophomore, Torrez is 5-9, 210 pounds and will likely play defensive tackle.

A big hole that will need to be filled is the one left behind center following the exit of Dave Putnam. The quarterback graduated in May, and Davis is unsure who will start as quarterback for the Greyhounds.

“We will be young and inexperienced, but I believe we will be competitive,” coach Davis said about the team’s chances in the district this season.

Throckmorton is in just its second season in District 12-A after the University Interscholastic League realignment following the 2001 season. Previously the Greyhounds had competed in District 13-A.
