Commissioners to allow controlled burns
By MARY HOPKINS / Staff Writer
Taylor County Commissioners amended last week's burn ban to
allow for controlled burns.
County Judge Lee Hamilton said farmers and ranchers could ask
permission for staging necessary controlled burns from the applicable
volunteer fire department chief.
In addition, all controlled burns must follow soil conservation
and safety guidelines as prescribed by the Natural Resource Conservation
Service.
Wind speeds greater than 20 miles per hour are dangerous, for
example, because fire creates its own wind, said a Natural Resource
Conservation Service representative. Winds at 8 miles per hour
are generally all right for controlled burns, but humidity levels
and fire-created winds also need consideration.
For information, farmers and ranchers may call 692-8238.
All other burning still is prohibited. Violations carry a fine
not to exceed $1,000 and/or up to 180 days in jail.
In other business, commissioners awarded a bid for the Expo
Center's Coliseum and Horse Barn Improvements to H&G Construction
Company.
Although Hamilton said H&G's base bid of $748,800 is $230,000
over the $519,000 budget, commissioners conceded the costs of
handicapped seating and other bid requirements were higher than
they'd expected.
And even with the overage, the improvements overall still were
$89,000 under the $2,730,000 budget.
"We're in good shape, budget-wise," Hamilton said.
