Izzard plans move to Abilene
Congressional candidate Rudy Izzard is moving to Abilene.
The former San Angelo city councilman, who has a dental practice
in Ballinger, said Tuesday he expects to move from San Angelo
in September or October. He and his family are looking for a house
in South Abilene, he said.
Izzard, a Republican, garnered 47 percent of the vote against
incumbent Democratic Rep. Charles Stenholm last November and intends
to challenge him again next year.
He will continue to practice in Ballinger three days a week,
Izzard said.
"My campaign is headquartered in Abilene and residing
there puts me in the geographic center of the 17th District,"
he said. "From a logistical standpoint, I can be a more effective
campaigner."
San Angelo is at the southern tip of the district and only
part of the city is within district boundaries; Izzard moved into
that portion of the city prior to last year's election. He had
said when he announced his candidacy in late 1995 that an eventual
move to Taylor County was possible.
Traveling for last year's campaign kept him from his family
for long stretches, Izzard said Tuesday.
The congressional seat is turning into a little boost for Abilene
real estate. Stenholm, a Stamford native, purchased a house in
Fairway Oaks earlier this year.
