Grand jury indicts Jones County sheriff
SANDRA CHITTUM / Abilene Reporter-News Correspondent
ANSON - A Jones County grand jury indicted Sheriff Robby Wedeking
Thursday night on misdemeanor charges of tampering with a government
document.
Grand jurors deliberated for 2-1/2 hours Wednesday in response
to an investigation of Wedeking by District Attorney Gary M. Brown.
Wedeking was arrested on Class A misdemeanor charges and posted
a $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
"This was a wild goose chase by the district attorney,"
said Wedeking. "I don't know what the charges are based on."
The sheriff said he will continue to perform his duties until
a trial.
Since it's a misdemeanor, the case will be prosecuted by County
Attorney Dwade King.
If convicted, Wedeking could face up to a $4,000 fine, one
year in the county jail and be removed from office.
Brown said could be removed from office before the trail if
he files a motion to remove him from office.
If signed by the 259th State District Court Judge Quay Parker,
Wedeking could be removed. Brown, however, didn't say whether
he would file the motion.
This was the second time the case has gone to the grand jury.
Brown started his investigation May 21.
A lifelong Jones County resident and Anson High School graduate,
Wedeking took office Jan. 1 after defeating Mike Middleton in
last year's election.
