Justice of the Peace announces retirement
By BETH HALLMARK / Abilene Reporter-News
First it was Taylor County Commissioner Neil Fry, and now Precinct
2 Justice of the Peace Jack Keenan says he won't seek re-election
in 1998 so he can spend more time with his family.
"This will be my third full term," Keenan said. "Like
Neil Fry said (about his decision not to run again), I'm at the
age that I probably ought to quit and enjoy my family. You can't
go on forever," he said.
Keenan, 71, was elected as Taylor County's Precinct 2 justice
of the peace in 1986, running as a Democrat after switching from
the Republican Party.
"I appreciate the people of Taylor County for letting
me serve," Keenan said.
"I've tried to run a good, friendly office," he said.
"I've always tried to treat people like I would like to be
treated."
And already there is a candidate waiting in the wings. Jo Ann
Mashburn, Keenan's chief clerk for the past eight years, said
she plans to run for the post now that her boss is leaving.
"I know the functions of the office," Mashburn said.
"I know I can do it, and I can do a good job."
Mashburn, 60, has worked as a secretary for justices of the
peace in Abilene, Tuscola, Lawn and Merkel since 1979.
The Merkel-area native will run as a Democrat.
"To me, there are no issues," in the race, she said.
"The judge is retiring and I feel like I am qualified to
do his job as well as anyone."
