Library supporters putting on the blitz
By ANTHONY WILSON / Abilene Reporter-News
Bright blue placards sprouting in yards across Abilene aren't
just an advertisement for the library bond issue; they're the
most visible sign that library boosters are hustling to win citizens'
support.
As the Nov. 4 vote nears, the pace of hundreds of volunteers
working on the bond's behalf quickens. Combatting the recent stream
of negative letters to the editor are hundreds of yard signs,
organized block walks, informational flyers, television ads and
presentations to PTAs, school faculties, civic groups and local
businesses.
"I feel real passionate about this," said Denise
Jones, who as part of an organized effort has contacted every
elementary campus in Abilene.
"The time is now," she continued. "If it doesn't
happen now, who will be deprived? Our children and their future."
The library campaign is organized and enthusiastic, if not
as loud as the detractors.
They have blanketed Abilene with 1,500 yard signs. They have
combed Abilene neighborhoods, handing out library data printed
on bookmarks. They have manned phone banks, talking up the bond's
importance. And they have distributed information sheets to parents,
teachers and the workforce of some of Abilene's largest employers.
Campaign officials have estimated about 200 Abilenians are
actively involved in the push.
"I couldn't even begin to guess," said Jane Jones,
president of the Friends of the Abilene Public Library. "Lots.
We're out of signs. When people want a sign, I tell them to make
one homemade. That's better than a commercial sign."
Another group of volunteers are emceeing 15-minute presentations
to most any gathering wanting information. The forums are booked
through election day.
"It's been effective," Jones said of the campaign.
"We've gotten positive feedback. We're real encouraged."
