Trails of Lights start in Sweetwater
By ROY A. JONES II / Abilene Reporter-News
SWEETWATER -- Two "Trails of Lights" will burn brightly
here tonight.
The first will be Sweetwater's Trail of Lights parade and Turn-On
Night celebration, an annual tradition kicking off the holiday
season.
The second trail will be a steady stream of headlights headed
east to Abilene's Shotwell Stadium for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff of
the Sweetwater Mustangs' football playoff game with Graham.
To accommodate those trying to attend both events, activities
will begin in Sweetwater 30 minutes earlier than originally planned,
officials said Wednesday.
Judging for the parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. The parade will
begin at 6 p.m. Turn-On activities on the courthouse square will
begin immediately after the parade, leaving time for the drive
to Abilene, said Ken Becker, executive director of the Sweetwater
Chamber of Commerce.
The date for both the Christmas parade and the Turn-On Night
for the Trail of Lights could not be changed to accommodate football
because the date had been set and advertised for more than a year,
and several out-of-town groups will be participating in the parade,
a committee member said.
Having the Mustangs in the playoffs has become a nice annual
tradition, too, but last year the big football game was played
on Saturday and did not interfere with the Trail of Lights.
But football fever -- not something to take "lightly"
-- was already running rampant: already turned-on fans turned
the Turn-On activities into a giant, impromptu pep rally.
After Turn-On Night, it'll be the Mustangs' turn to keep the
celebration going.
