Recall issued for dangerous Christmas lights
Retailers nationwide are recalling more than 1.5 million sets
of curtain-style, indoor-outdoor Christmas lights, according to
the Abilene Fire Department.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling the
lights because electrical wiring can pull out of the splices of
these light sets, presenting a hazard, officials said.
No fires because of the lights have been reported locally,
however, the safety commission and retailers are hoping to prevent
such occurences, said Abilene fire Capt. Tony Keefer.
"We want to remind people that they should take them back,"
Keefer said.
These lights have a "splicing connector," located
at the point where the strings of lights hang down the horizontal
electrical wire, that can pull apart or break, Keefer said.
"It can pull loose and expose wires," he said.
To see if you have these lights, check for "Curtain,"
"Icicle" and "Wonder Lights."
They were sold in strings of 100 or 150 lights in boxes containing
one string and sets of three or more strings.
The following numbers indicate the lights being recalled: E115759,
E126258, E127357, E127522, E48723, E64444, E65770 and E97593.
Curtain-style lights without splice connectors are not involved
in this recall.
These lights sold nationwide from September 1995 to November
1997. Consumers should stop using these lights immediately and
return them to the store where purchased for a refund.
Consumers with questions can contact CPSC's toll-free hotline
at 800-638-2722.
