Abilene schools earn ticket to state math competition
Teams from Wylie Junior High School and Mann Middle School
have qualified for the state Mathcounts competition next month
in Austin.
Competing against nine other schools at the local contest Saturday
at McMurry University, Wylie and Mann finished first and second,
respectively, in the team round.
Individuals earning a ticket to the state meet were Conrad
Hester, first-place winner from Lincoln Middle School, and Wylie
Junior High's Bobby McMillian, who came in second.
Third-place winners were Madison Middle School in the team
category and Russ Kennedy of Madison in the individual standings.
Team members for the top three schools are: Wylie, Hunter Hanner,
Bobby McMillian, Melissa Berny, Brennan Pursley and coach Carol
Stringfellow; Mann, Edward Oliphant, Alan Alderson, Brandon McAuliffe,
Nicci Cooper and coach Dixie Mabry; and Madison, Cason Clifton,
Erin Glynn, Russ Kennedy, Erin Perez and coaches Bitty Perkins
and Foy Owens.
The local competition was sponsored by the Abilene chapter
of Texas Society of Professional Engineers.
Other schools participating were Franklin, Jefferson, Sweetwater,
Brownwood, Merkel, Ira and Early.
