McMurry recognized for "best value"
McMurry University has been named one of the nation's best
values in liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report's
1998 America's Best Colleges guide.
McMurry ranked first in Texas and second in the Western Region,
which includes a number of western states, in best value for liberal
arts colleges. This is the second consecutive year that McMurry
was selected.
McMurry also received a first-tier ranking by the magazine
in overall quality of education. McMurry is one of only five first-tier
schools in Texas in its category and is among an elite group of
liberal arts colleges selected nationally for the first-tier ranking.
"President Robert Shimp has expressed a goal of being
recognized as one of the finest small church-related universities
in the Southwest by the 21st century," said Dr. Paul Lack,
vice president for academic affairs. "Recognition by the
U.S. News study is an example of that kind of recognition."
Lack said that this fall, 84 percent of McMurry's full-time
faculty members hold the highest degrees or credentials in their
disciplines.
"We expect that figure to rise to 90 percent in the next
two years," Lack said.
Lack said he believes one reason McMurry was named a Best Value
is that it doesn't charge its students a technology fee.
Best Values are ranked by relating an institution's quality
to its total cost. Only the schools in the top quarter of the
Best Colleges ranking are considered for the Best Value designation.
McMurry is affiliated with the Northwest Texas and New Mexico
Conferences of the United Methodist Church.
