Abilene physician named distinguished alumnus
Dr. Kenneth Day, Class of '43, a longtime Abilene physician
in both general practice and psychiatry, is the 1997 McMurry University
Distinguished Alumnus.
Day served as the McMurry athletic team doctor from 1956 to
1966 while working as a family physician in Abilene. He was founder
of the Taylor County Welfare Clinic, now known as the Medical
Care Mission, and served as a consultant to the West Texas Rehabilitation
Center.
He has been a member of the Hendrick Medical Center medical
staff since 1956 and Abilene Regional Medical Center staff since
1970.
The Loraine native has been in private practice as a psychiatrist
in Abilene since 1970. Day was founder and director of the Hendrick
Medical Center Care Unit while serving concurrently as director
of behavioral medicine for the Hendrick Family Practice Residency
Program.
He also was founder and director of Abilene Youth/Adolescent
Center, which later became Woods Psychiatric Institute. He has
served on the boards and as a consultant to many medical and psychiatric
organizations across the country.
While at McMurry, Day was a member of the Chanters choral group,
McMurry Band, head yell leader and member of the staff of the
War Whoop student newspaper. He was a member of KIVA men's social
club and was selected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
After graduation from McMurry in 1943, Day was a P-51 fighter
pilot in World War II, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Day earned a medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston. He and his wife, Ruby Jo Marshall Day, a 1944 graduate
of McMurry, have two children.
