McMurry prepares for homecoming
McMurry University's Wah Wahtaysee Park will be transformed
into a colorful Indian Village overnight Thursday to play host
to thousands of school-age children on Friday as Homecoming '97
festivities begin on campus.
Tipi Village tours will be from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
This year's theme, "Celebrate the Spirit," will encompass
the McMurry school spirit, the spirt that keeps the Indian traditions
alive and the school's Christian spirit.
Homecoming '97 kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday in Wah Wahtaysee
Park with a McMurry Band concert at 5 p.m. followed at 5:30 by
the traditional Sunset Ceremony and shooting the arrow to open
homecoming festivities.
A tepee-raising contest will follow for the men's and women's
social clubs participating in Tipi Village.
Other major activities this weekend include the formal dedication
of the Phillips Family Activity Center honoring longtime Abilene
businessman Sam Phillips and his family members who graduated
from McMurry; and a luncheon honoring the 1997 Distinguished Alumnus
Dr. Kenneth Day of Abilene.
Thursday activities include a Lady Indian volleyball game versus
Austin College at 7 p.m. and the math and science advisory board
banquet in the Mabee Room honoring three longtime McMurry science
and math professors -- Dr. Virgil E. Bottom, Dr. W. Norton Jones
and Dr. Richard D. Moore.
Friday activities include an alumni and friends golf tournament
at Fairway Oaks Country Club, an art exhibit by LaGina Fairbetter
in Ryan Gallery and 40th and 50th year reunions for the J.W. Hunt
Society.
The homecoming musical, "Fiddler on the Roof" and
the royalty coronation begin at 7:30 p.m. in Radford Auditorium,
followed by a bonfire immediately after the ceremonies.
Saturday activities will revolve around the 2:30 p.m. kickoff
as the McMurry Indians take on the Sul Ross State Lobos.
Reunions are scheduled for the Chanters, Servant Leadership
preceptors, cheerleaders and 10th, 25th and 35th year classes.
A dance will conclude the day's activities from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
in the Mabee Room.
A worship service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Carleton Chapel in
the campus center 'will conclude homecoming activities.
