Community Thanksgiving meal draws crowd
By BILL WHITAKER / Abilene Reporter-News
An estimated 400 people took advantage of the Civic Center's
Thanksgiving meal coordinated by the Taylor County Veterans Service
Office and prepared by Zapata's Cafe & Cantina.
What's more, Taylor County Veterans Service Officer Nebra Peters
was amazed at the waves of community aid offered.
"I was just overwhelmed by all the volunteers who showed
up this morning to help us put this thing on," she said.
"I lost count of how many there actually were. I told Jeff
Andress, who runs Zapata's, that we might have to feed hundreds
of volunteers besides the hundreds coming by for dinner.
"There were groups I'd never heard of that came out to
help today," she said. "But most of them helped out,
then went home to be with their own families."
Among the civic leaders helping serve dinner and wait on tables
were Taylor County Judge Lee Hamilton, Mayor Gary McCaleb, county
commissioners Stan Egger, Jack Turner and Neil Fry, and "Uncle
Sam in Action" director Lois Dunlap, the latter dressed up
as "Uncle Sam."
Plenty of entertainment was offered, too, including 8-year-old
child prodigy Ryan Chalkley, who played classical selections on
the piano; the country band The Music Makers; and religious music
sung (and, for a few moments, whistled) by Paul Matta.
