Remembering the valor and the sacrifices
By ANISSA CAMP Staff Writer
A field of stars and stripes danced under the bright morning
sun as soldiers and families remembered fallen heroes Monday during
Memorial Day services at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Col. George A. Vidrine, 7th Support Group commander at Dyess
Air Force Base, told the crowd of the cost of freedom.
"Freedom is not free," he said.
As Vidrine spoke, tears welled in some people's eyes.
"We will remember the valor and the sacrifices that have
taken place," Vidrine said.
Vidrine quoted Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
"The world will little remember what we say here, but
it can never forget what they did here," Vidrine said.
In closing, Vidrine put forth a challenge to people in rememberance
of Memorial Day.
"It is our challenge on this Memorial Day, to remind ourselves,
our children, and our grandchildren, of how much we owe to those
who made the ultimate sacrifice," Vidrine said.
The Minda Street Church of Christ choir led the ceremony with
the National Anthem, and Norris Lineweaver gave the invocation.
Boy Scout Troop 208 led the Pledge of Allegiance and the riderless
horse was accompanied by Dr. William O. Beazley.
Members from several service organization auxiliaries led the
laying of the wreath ceremony by placing six wreaths around a
flag flown at half-staff.
