Gen. Northington leaving Dyess in March

By MARY HOPKINS / Staff Writer

The 7th Wing at Dyess Air Force Base will see a change of command when Brig. Gen. Larry Northington departs at the end of March.

His next assignment will take him to a new Air Force Plans and Programs Division at Headquarters, United States Air Force, in Washington, D.C.

The new wing commander at Dyess will be Brig. Gen. (select) Michael C. McMahan, who has been deputy director for operations at United States Atlantic Command in Norfolk, Va. McMahan is a graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

The change of command ceremony is scheduled for March 26.

Northington returned to Dyess for his second tour of duty in August 1995. He previously was vice-commander of the 96th Bomb Wing from August 1991 through June 1992.

"Our second tour in Abilene has been wonderful, full of challenges and opportunities. We've made some great friends, and we look forward to keeping those relationships going. Although we're looking forward to new challenges, we're certainly going to miss Dyess and Abilene," said Northington.

"General Northington has been a commander's commander. Abilene, Dyess and the people of our respective communities have prospered under his leadership and involvement," said Frank Puckett, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.

"Northington took his mission seriously and always put the welfare of his people first. He's destined for further success in the Air Force. I'm glad he and his wife Linda were a part of our community. We'll miss them, but we don't plan to lose contact. They will continue to be our friends," Puckett said.

McMahan was unavailable for comment Thursday.

The change in command is timely, said Capt. Nomi Russi, chief of public affairs at Dyess, because on April 1 all Dyess C-130s are scheduled to transfer command to the 317th Airlift Group, which will fall under Air Mobility Command.

The 7th Wing currently falls under Air Combat Command, Russi said.
