Nurse helps others first

By DON KING / ARN Correspondent

SWEETWATER -- A Sweetwater nurse has been recognized for unselfishly helping treat others when she herself was a victim.

Sally Flores, a registered nurse at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, was driving out of Sweetwater with a friend early Sunday when their pickup skidded out of control on an ice-covered overpass and struck a guard rail at an estimated 55 miles per hour.

While she was being treated in the Rolling Plains emergency room for what was initially thought to be a broken arm, the hospital was alerted that four critically injured patients were being brought there from a major accident near Roscoe.

That's when Flores turned from patient to nurse.

Although she had been admitted to the hospital for observation, when she saw others more seriously injured she ignored her own injuries and began treating the other accident victims.

After all four patients were stabilized -- two of them airlifted to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene -- Flores resumed her role as a patient. X-rays eventually showed her arm was not fractured, only badly bruised, and she was back at work -- although a little sore -- on Monday.

For her dedication and concern for others, Flores was presented a letter of commendation during Monday's hospital board meeting.

Dr. Robert Musgrove, chairman of the board, said Flores "played a key and indispensable role in the care of the patients and is an outstanding example of a dedicated, unselfish and caring hospital team member."
