Abilene Area Pecan Show more than doubles last year's entries

By J.T. SMITH / Abilene Reporter-News

The Abilene Area Pecan Show had a whopping 142 nut entries this year at the Mall of Abilene Monday and Tuesday.

Since 42 pecans comprise a single entry, that amounted to 5,964 pecans.

Besides the nut competition, the food show also overflowed with entries in both the adult and youth divisions.

In nut judging, R.D. Hearn of Abilene showed the Grand Champion Commercial Division with his Pawnee entry. Reserve commercial title was shared by runners-up Pat Shields of Abilene, with Cheyenne pecans, and J.R. Black of Abilene, who entered Choctaws.

Alton Lusk of Abilene showed the Grand Champion Classic with a Comanche entry, while J.H. Taylor, also of Abilene, had the reserve classic with his Burkett pecans.

Robert Mayfield of Abilene raised the Grand Champion Native pecans. Reuben Jones of Abilene showed the reserve champion of that division.

Jimmie Laurie of Roby took honors for Smallest Native.

Meanwhile, Extension Agent Lynda Fogerson reported outstanding entries in the Pecan Show Food Division.

Jones also excelled in food competition, earning the "Adult Sweepstakes Winner" title. Charleen Ashby of Abilene was the runner-up for adults.

Kristi Hardy of Abilene was the "Youth Sweepstakes Winner." William Hardy was the runner-up for youngsters.

The show was open to Taylor, Callahan, Coleman, Runnels, Nolan, Fisher, Jones, Shackelford and Coke counties.
