American Eagle co-pilot suffers chest pains
From staff and wire reports
FORT WORTH - An American Eagle co-pilot suffered chest pains
during a flight from Abilene to Dallas-Fort Worth on Friday afternoon,
prompting an emergency landing.
The co-pilot, whose name was not released, was stricken by
pain about 12:40 p.m. when Flight 5108 was 15 minutes east of
Abilene and a half hour from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport,
American Eagle spokesman Mitch Baranowski said.
The plane was in the process of climbing to a cruising altitude.
The captain relieved the co-pilot of his duties and requested
clearance for an emergency landing in Dallas, Baranowski said.
Passenger Kristi Kirsch, 25, said the flight wasn't extraordinary
other than it being "a very quick landing - quicker than
normal."
Kirsch said the pilot announced after the plane had landed
that the co-pilot had suffered a possible heart attack. Kirsch
was visiting her mother in Abilene and was headed home to Houston.
Paramedics were waiting for the plane and treated the co-pilot
at the airport before taking him to a hospital.
"We hope he'll be released later today. He may be kept
overnight," Baranowski said. "It does not appear he
suffered a heart attack."
Twenty-eight passengers were aboard the Saab 340B aircraft.
American Eagle is a regional affiliate of Fort Worth-based American
Airlines.
