Pioneer Day set for June 7
It's a fun time of the year at Abilene State Park.
The 4th annual Pioneer Day will be June 7.
Registration for the many activities begins at 11 a.m. at the
park office on State Highway 89, just 5 miles west of Buffalo
Gap.
There is no extra cost to take part in any activity at the
state park. General admission to the park is just $3 per person
for those 13 and older.
"It's a whole day of fun and old-time games from horse
shoes to washers, and buffalo chip and water balloon tosses,"
says Park Ranger Steve Rogers.
Two chuckwagons will be set up with all the authentic cooking
equipment, reflecting our western heritage. There will be cowboy
entertainment throughout the day, with camp songs from past, as
well as frontier and modern poetry readings. Meanwhile, the volleyball
tournament will match two-person teams.
All events will have prizes for first, second, and third places.
Merchants from Abilene and Buffalo Gap have donated the prizes.
Rogers says there will be performances by a bluegrass band
at various times throughout the day at the cowboy camp, along
with several cowboy singers.
The "Order of the Arrow" Indian dancers also will
be dancing at the Indian T-Pee Village.
Buck-skinned mountain men will display their wares. And there
will be a demonstration of the guns of the Old West, along with
cavalry weapons and pistols. At the end of all the games, any
donated prizes that are left over will be raffled.
In addition, children can enjoy a six-car train. Meanwhile,
wagon and buggy rides will be available for everyone of all ages.
A rope maker from Dallas will demonstrate skills of rope making
throughout the day. A horse shoe demonstration also will be conducted
at various times.
The swimming pool at Abilene State Park will be open from noon
to 8 p.m.
Roland Smith and his band will begin playing at 8 p.m.
