Haskell principal resigns
By ROY A. JONES II / Abilene Reporter-News
HASKELL - Civic leader Greg Melton, a former Haskell mayor,
has resigned as principal of Haskell High School to accept a similar
job in Graham.
Melton, who has been with Haskell schools for 16 years and
high school principal since 1992, will be assistant principal
of Graham High School, a 4A high school. Haskell is a 2A school.
Melton's parents also live in Graham.
A graduate of Abilene Christian University, where he earned
bachelor's and master's degrees in history, Melton was planning
to go to Texas A&M and pursue a doctorate when he was asked
to teach history at Haskell.
He hadn't taken any education courses and wasn't interested
at first, he said, but then he decided to take a year off from
his studies. He's been here ever since.
He hadn't planned to enter politics, either, but in 1985 a
city councilman asked him to serve out the unexpired term of Mayor
Abe Turner, who had resigned for health reasons.
He later ran unopposed for the job, and at 28 was one of the
youngest mayors of an incorporated city in Texas. During his administration
he emphasized beautification of the city.
A lake was constructed in the city park by damming the creek
that runs through town. The Veterans of Foreign Wars planted trees
in the park, and the bank and a few citizens purchased ducks and
geese.
The city also received a federal grant to improve streets.
As if being a teacher, principal and mayor weren't enough,
Melton also has been preacher for the Church of Christ at Goree
for many years. He also has taught at Western Texas College's
Haskell extension.
"Haskell is really going to miss him, in more ways than
one," one school official said.
Melton was named Outstanding Principal of the Year by the Region
14 Secondary Principals Association last year. He had won the
Outstanding Assistant Principal award from the same organization
before moving up to principal.
Melton's wife, D'Anne, was a library assistant for Haskell
schools. They have two sons, Taylor and Brady.
